Cypress essential oil
Potential efficacity for hair loss : ⭐⭐

My recommendation

I believe that cypress essential oil has potential, but it’s still too early to confidently assert that it can truly be effective against hair loss. I suggest considering alternative solutions.

Cypress essential oil is extracted from the leaves and stems of Cupressus sempervirens trees. With its fresh, pine-like scent and therapeutic antimicrobial, antiseptic, and astringent health benefits, cypress oil is widely used in aromatherapy, skin care, and as a natural decongestant.

Cypress essential oil composition:

  • α-Pinene (14-70%)
  • Sabinene (9-36%)
  • Carene (6-13%)
  • Limonene (5-20%)
  • Cymene (5-12%)
  • Camphene (5-10%)
  • α-Terpinene (1-8%)

Is it effective against hair loss?

As of today, it is challenging to come across studies on the essential oil of cypress and its relationship with hair loss.

There is only one Korean study conducted in 2009 where researchers tested the essential oil of Japanese cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa) on mice whose hair had been shaved. The results were positive, indicating that Japanese cypress may accelerate hair growth, possibly through the induction of VEGF, a growth regulator.

Another study suggests that it possesses anti-inflammatory properties by inhibiting the expression of inflammation-related genes such as TNFα and COX-2. Other studies assert its antiseptic properties, meaning it can eliminate bacteria.

However, in general, it is premature to draw any conclusions regarding the use of cypress essential oil against hair loss. Perhaps a more in-depth examination of its components individually is warranted, which is something I plan to explore later on.

Closing thoughts and verdict

I believe that cypress essential oil has potential, but it’s still too early to confidently assert that it can truly be effective against hair loss.

I suggest considering alternative solutions.
